When I moved to my new home near Pomona, after a few weeks, I had a few Kookaburras visiting me and then the number grew to seven. However I started to notice that one Kookaburra seemed to be an outcast. It never ate when the others ate, but sat in a nearby tree. After they had all flown away it would come and sit on the veranda railing and in a few days it let me feed it little bits of meat by hand. I noticed that it was sleeping in the tree, I would see it last thing at night and when I awoke early and opened the curtains it was still in the tree.
One day, walking out the door I noticed my cat staring at a bush near the entrance steps. He looked away from the bush at me and instantly a baby rat, jumped out of the bush and ran over to a nearby sapling and ran up it. The cat ran after it and tried to climb the sapling but it was bending over, he was too heavy and he just sat underneath looking up at the rat.
The Kookaburra came over to the veranda railing wanting food.
“If you are hungry go and catch that rat,” I said, pointing at the rat, which was sitting on a small branch at the top of the sapling. Kooka looked at me and over at the tree and flew to the tree, caught the rat and flew off to a big gum tree, where he started banging the rat on the tree to kill it and then he………..well I did not watch to see what happened but I think we can all guess.
